SpudShow 153 Artist - Lily Neill Track 1 - The Silver Heart
Gigs
Bio - (from web site) Lily Neill is recognized as “…part of the new Harp revolution extolling aspects of harp music never previously heard? (John O’Regan, Irish Music Magazine, June 2005). She performs both her original compositions and the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland on the lever harp and developed her musical style from seisiún playing, an uncommon route for harp players, utilizing techniques from other instruments. Her music is both rich in tradition yet uniquely her own. Both her playing and the music that she writes draw from a diverse range of styles and her interpretations are inspired by her experiences working with artists from many different genres and backgrounds. Lily has won numerous honors, scholarships and awards for her harp playing, including first place as well as additional awards of distinction at the U.S. National Scottish Harp Competition for four consecutive years and a medal at the All-Ireland Harp Competition. More recently, she was named LiveIreland.com’s “2006 New Female Artist of the Year.? “Without Words,? Lily's debut solo album, has garnered an impressive array of reviews since its release. “Hot Press,? Ireland’s essential guide to music, gives “Without Words? an 8 out of 10 and writes of Neill: “The CD reveals her to be far more than the superb technician she undoubtedly is.…? Sweden’s “Hallandsposten? gave it a 4 out of 5 and calls Lily’s music, “a thrilling journey across the Irish tradition.? America’s “Celtic Beat? writes: “Without Words could only better be entitled Beyond Words. One word for this CD is exquisite. …this music goes far beyond simply artistry of execution and aesthetics, for it reaches out and entices you into Lily Neill’s world.? Lily has performed at numerous concert halls and festivals in the United States and Ireland, including The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage as well as its Concert Hall with The Chieftains and the late Derek Bell in 2001 & 2002, Wolftrap Center for the Performing Arts, the University of Limerick Concert Hall and Strathmore Hall where she was Artist in Residence in February 2007. She has also performed at The Potomac Celtic Festival, the Washington Irish Festival and the Irish Arts Festival in conjunction with the Embassy of Ireland. At the age of fourteen, she performed for President Bill Clinton and was a featured soloist in the American premiere of John Cameron’s “Missa Celtica?. Lily has also appeared in film and on television and radio: RTE/TG4’s “Ardán? and “Ceili House? (Ireland), Lähiradio‘s “Folk and Roots? (Finland), BBC’s “Late Junction? (U.K.) and NPR’s “Traditions? (USA), among others. Lily Neill recently completed work for her degree in Irish Traditional Music at the Irish World Academy at the University of Limerick, Ireland. She also spent a semester studying music at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. video from BalconyTV The Hedrons from Glasgow The Hedrons music is decidedly one part Ramones-esque brawn, one part femme-fatale roar, and one part ruthless guitar-driven nerve. Or as lead guitarist Rosie humorously puts it, "If you listen to us, you wouldn't realise it was girls until Tippi starts singing - you'd think it was a bunch of big hairy guys playing." And although the girls would personally describe their sound as the modern love child of the Foo Fighters and Joan Jett, they would also say that the very same is proudly godfathered by Iggy Pop & The Stooges.
