SpudShow 122 Artist - Briege Murphy Track 1 - Cloghinn Winds Lovely Singing, Good Songs, a Joy to hear" - Christy Moore Briege Murphy was born and reared in the village of Forkhill in South Armagh, in the North of Ireland, where she still lives with her husband and two daughters. Briege grew up on a farm within a large family steeped in the musical tradition. Her mother Brigid was, unwittingly, a collector of songs and stories. Her brother Brian, a well-known traditional singer won the Ulster Championship for traditional singing numerous times. So it is no surprise that music plays a big part of Briege’s life. As a teenager Briege joined her local branch of Comhaltas and often sang in their renowned sessions which is so typical of the Irish scene today. A few years back Briege began to write her own contemporary folk/country ballads and when a demo of two of her songs were played on a weekly BBC Folk Programme, listeners were asking for more. She was persuaded to get her collection of songs together and record an album herself. The album “The Longest Road? was released to critical acclaim, followed by “The Sea and other Songs?, which was named as one of the albums of the year by Folk Roots magazine. Her third album “The Elm Wood? was welcomed and greatly appreciated by a steadily growing fan base. In September 2004 Briege releases a new album entitled “From Now On?. On this album she returns to her roots and sings songs that she grew up with, combining her love of Irish traditional and American folk. Briege has performed at festivals from Cambridge to Cork and Oslo to Ballyshannon. She continues to write and sing at festivals, art centres and folk clubs or anywhere a good ballad is appreciated. Her songs have been recorded by artists like Niamh Parsons and Frances Black amongst others. In November 2003 Briege represented Ireland in an International song contest in Holland, singing one of her own compositions in Gaelic, coming 5th out of 70 bands across Europe. YouTube have pulled the plug on BalconyTV and a number of the SpudFlicks are gone.

SpudShow 121 Artist - Una Quinn Track 1 - Face to Face http://www.myspace.com/unaquinn Irish singer Una Quinn, currently based in the soulful town of Liverpool. Once member of punky rock group hoop, Una's solo work traces its way through subtle angelic beauty to raw soulful sounds. Once listened to Una is very difficult to forget. "Face to face" was recorded in the Amma centre Armagh very early one morning September 2005. The track was produced by Niall. "Blue Day" has been recorded in a number of places with different versions, including an organic farm outside Belfast in the wee hours of the morning. This particular version was recorded at LIPA studios, Liverpool (June 2006)and produced by Sandros.

SpudShow 119 Artist - Clare Cunningham Track 1 - Daddys with the angels Info - Clare Cunningham is an up and coming artist and a musical force to be reckoned with! With a powerful, distinctive voice this girl certainly does not need a mic, at the best of times!A singer/songwriter from the tender age of 14, Clare has been penning songs for nearly 6 years now. Curiousity took her to the piano at 7 years of age and is now Clare's main instrument, although, in an effort to add 'varity' to her sound, Clare began to teach herself the guitar just over 2 years ago.She leaves herself open to, but defies stereotypes. Her desire to sing has never ebbed. It is the proficiancy in her playing that sets her playing which sets her apart from many of her female contempories. Clare draws influence from such diverse sources as Cheryl Crow, Oasis, Greenday, Fugees, Aretha Franklin and Garth Brooks. Clare has currently brought out a self titled compilation cd of 6 songs consisting of her own material...although not in shops,we hope to watch out for this space...!

SpudShow 116 Artist - Valerie Hely Track 1 - All is not what Info - Valerie's musical background ranges from Rock to Baroque and Hip Hop to Pop. She started by busking on the streets of Galway before joining an originals rock band called "Voice of Cheese" for three years. Following the band splitting up, she joined a trip hop band called "Kinetic" in Sydney for several months. As well a stint as a singer for medieval castle banquets and as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator, Valerie has followed many varied musical paths and tastes. However, she has always found time to write and record her own songs which she enjoys above all the rest. She sings about space, people growing up too fast, rushing and shopping trolleys. Her efforts in the past have brought her airplay in Australia and Ireland plus meetings with Mute records in London. A recent move to Cork city in Ireland has re-ignited her passion for singing her own songs. After experimenting on her 4-track for a couple of months, she has decided that she's happy with her new songs and hopes that others can enjoy them too. Valerie also features on several tracks on a new album by up and coming Dublin band Groom. She performed with them as a guest vocalist at Vicar Street, Dublin in November '06 when they supported Jeff Tweedy (Wilco). SpudShow has been nominated for Irish Blog Awards in the Music Blog Section.

SpudShow 113 Artist - Oracle Track 1 - Walk Away Info - I am here to define what Irish R'N'B should sound like, It's something that seems to get over-looked. Lyrical content is something i feel strongly about, i really consider that i pour a great deal of thought & emotion into my pen as i write. I can only hope that it comes across and others can relate. It's about time Irish hip hop and R'n'B got the recognition it deserves, hopefully it will soon.
